Because these areas are impervious and do not let rain soak into the ground they need retaining areas to hold water quickly during a rain storm.
Since these systems are not closed, but open drainage areas it likely they can harbor toxins that may effect your horses, cattle, or pets. As a licensed aquatic herbicide applicator we are sensitive to what we add to the water.
Typically, most of the treatments we use on a monthly basis have no restrictions for livestock or swimming. However, in a rare instance we do need to use a treatment with restrictions we will notify our members prior to treating.
Farm ponds are typically closed systems that are either stream, spring, or well feed ponds. These ponds are completely dependent on the quality of the water that is feeding them.
We would recommend having these water sources tested frequently. Because waterways are all connected as part of a larger watershed areas it is always possible a neighboring property could have a direct impact on your fish or livestock.
