Draining a pond before stocking a pond is often necessary when fish populations are dramatically unbalanced, few fish of any value or structural work is needed.
For instance, we had a client contact us about a 1-2 acre pond that was electrofished and was found to have only a few catfish and a small number of bream. The clients goal was to have trophy largemouth bass with a heavy fishing load during the warmer season.
In this case, it was recommended after the electrofishing survey to kill the Fish with Rotenone and start over with new stocking recipe. However, after spending good money on a survey, they decided just to stock 300 largemouth basses. So why did he call us? He wanted to catch fish and was not able to.
Pond management uses tools like Rotenone, electrofishing, habitats, supplemental fish feeders, fish stocking, and numerous methods to work in harmony with nature to create living ecosystems that work together to produce trophy fish.
Leaving out the management process will always result in small and poor fishing. The best money a pond owner can spend is starting with a management plan before draining a pond. Often a pond does not need to be drained to achieve the goals of the pond.
