Turtles are scavengers or the “clean-up crew” of every pond. They enjoy eating dead fish and usually are harmless to most fish. However, large snapping turtles are known to eat ducklings by stalking them from below the surface of the pond.
The large issue most people have with turtles like the popular red ear slider or soft shell turtle, is that they can rapidly reproduce and become over populated in a small pond in just a few short years. This can become a strain on budget when your fish food is feeding mostly turtles and not your fish.
Small turtles which are only a few pounds can be humanly trapped in a floating turtle trap and relocated to a larger body of water. This trap tips into a floating cage when the unsuspecting turtle tries to sun itself with a convenient ramp out of the water. The trap holds a couple of dozen turtles and should be checked regularly and emptied.
Snapping turtles on the other hand are much harder to remove. Baiting snappers into a funnel cage seems to be the most reliable way of removing them from your pond.
Just remember balance is the goal not eradication. A healthy ecosystem works in harmony.
