In the past month, we have identified numerous ponds in Greenville SC & Charlotte NC with cyanobacteria, also know as blue-green algae. Using the fuel from the sun this algae can grow both seen and unseen in a pond a lake.
Often identified by a slick green oily substance that moves with the wind. It can appear to grow worse during the day and sink during the evening because of the lack of photosynthesis.
Cyanobacteria is a toxic substance that has been proven to be harmful to aquatic life and humans. Water with blue-green algae is not safe for swimming or drinking.
If you your pond has an algae problem like this we strongly recommend calling a lake management professional to treat the water with an algaecide.
