Beavers are on the move all the time. They can invade your pond paradise often undetected. These busy creature work during the night prioritizing their pond projects.
The first sign of beavers is typically around the flowing of water. Beavers intinctively are relentless at stopping the sound of flowing water. Creating dams lets them deepen the pooling area and insures a safety area to build their lodge.
Of course, in order to do this they must find wood which is where your trees come in to play. Beavers will chew on trees strategically to meet their priorities. The choice of trees are usually within the closest distance to their project. So it is critical to walk your property a least weekly to insure they have not taken over.
Fresh wood chips and white bite marks in and around trees are what you need to looking for. Once found they can be removed if within close proximity of a residential area. Otherwise, a permit maybe needed. If in doubt, consult your local Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Beavers will also chew on sweet bark such as willows as part of their diet. Unfortunally, most HOA ponds or farm ponds have a limited number of trees and can not support a beaver population. Now before you start showing pity on the beavers, they are highly over populated in North and South Carolina.
