Ted owns a farm pond in Charlotte, NC where he, his wife, and three kids love to go fishing and swimming. He went down to his pond one day and saw that what he thought was normal vegetation had spread in mats across the pond. He knew this wasn’t normal so he contacted the Clemson Extension office to see if they could identify the problem.
After finding out that it was filamentous and planktonic algae, he looked to SePro for answers. They pointed him in our direction because we are his regional SePRO Aquatic Specialist. When Ted told us what was going on, we knew a surfactant along with Captain XTR (or Cutrine) was the best way to go. A surfactant (also called surface-active agent) is designed to reduce the surface tension of your pond or lake, improve your water quality, and reduce pollutants. Plant leaves have a natural barrier that makes it difficult for chemical herbicides to pass through. A surfactant will break up that tension.
We add surfactants (we use Tactic) to act like glue for a longer exposure of the herbicide, to keep the wind from blowing our treatment during application, and if a pop-up rain shower comes, it doesn’t wash it off weeds like cattails. It also helps to break the surface tension on the water surface to help the treatment to sink.
Captain XTR is one of the best available technology for the control of all types of algae. Captain XTR is optimized to increase the penetration of copper (through INFUSION) into algae cells and enhance efficacy (SePro.com). It is a highly effective algaecide that controls a broad range of algae in lakes and ponds among other places.
We told Ted that if he decided to become a member, with this plan, his pond should be back to it’s normal healthy self within four days. He did decide to become a member, and now his family can enjoy fishing and swimming without worrying about algae and aquatic weeds!

Plant leaves have a natural barrier that makes it difficult for chemical herbicides to move through. We use a surfactant with aquatic herbicides to break up the tension and to help the product to start working promptly and completely.
Surfactants do not hurt plants or aquatic weeds by themselves. They are added to herbicides to create a product that penetrates the waxy surface of the leaves and stems.
It works alongside herbicides letting the mixture stick, spread, penetrate, soak in the aquatic weed before the rain, kill the noxious weed and, avoid vaporization and drift.
