Ever wonder what water treatments are being added to your pond or lake?
Yesterday we consulted with an HOA that became a member of Platinum Ponds & Lake Management and asked us to begin caring for their .3 acre retention pond.
In the conversation with an HOA board member and the committee, a question came up about what we use to treat the pond.
The question was based on the experience of one of the committee members living on a waterfront property that was treated with copper sulfate, which resulted in a fish kill.
This not only made the fishing poor but, the odor was horrendous.
The HOA’s retention pond is right in front of the HOA swimming pool. Not only were they concerned about their bluegill and sunfish from dying with a fish kill, but can you imagine the smell of swimming next to a pond with dead fish?
This HOA loves their bluegill, bass, and sunfish and enjoys feeding them. However, retention ponds are part of the stormwater system. Stormwater systems are designed for controlling watershed not fish stocking.
This does not mean you can not add fish to a stormwater pond, but we would recommend not eating them. Controlling and caring for the stormwater pond should always be a higher priority than stocking them with fish.
Fish Stocking & Aquatic Herbicides
Now we are not trying to make the fish stocking businesses angry or lose business but, we want to inform that they will sell you fish to stock your stormwater pond.
Our approach at Platinum Ponds & Lake Management is to give our members with commercial properties, or HOA’s the knowledge and resources they need to save money and keep their ponds or lakes beautiful year round. We offer pond management in the Greenville SC, Spartanburg SC, Asheville NC, Charlotte NC, & surrounding areas.
We have seen too many HOA’s and property owners with retention ponds or lakes spend thousands of dollars on fish stocking when they should be more concerned with the sleeping giant, sedimentation removal. If you thought the fish stocking or the floating fountain was expensive, think again.
Sedimentation removal a pond that is only one acre in size typically costs $50k-$75k. If the retention pond is not cared for with good pond or lake management practices, there could be a need for it to be dredged every 10-15 years instead of every 25-30 years.
Our goal at Platinum Ponds & Lake Management is to help, as a third party, give objective information your HOA needs to prioritize the steps necessary for planning for the future of your retention pond or lake.
