Neighborhood stormwater systems are extremely important because they directly affect the people in the community. That means that the ponds upkeep needs to be prioritized by the HOA or pond owner.

As you may have seen in our previous blog, “Types of Systems,” stormwater systems manage rainfall runoff. When that runoff is not managed, it can result in pollution among other things.

When you live in a neighborhood you may not know who is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the stormwater system. The Home Owners Association is usually the responsible party for labor and financially for keeping the system functional.

Why are neighborhood systems important? Like I mentioned earlier, rainfall runoff needs to me managed because it comes into direct contact with the people in the community.

You might be thinking, “Okay, so what?” Well when rainwater is falling off of roofs, running down the streets and parking lots, it can pick up a lot of pollution and trash. All of that can be compared to sewage. It can also result in an uncontrollable amount of algae growth. All of which are harmful.

stormwater drainAs stated earlier, your HOA should have everything under control. However; there are a few ways that you can help in the prevention of water pollution.

One way is to clean up trash and yard waste in your yard and gutters and around storm drains. A few more ways are to learn which plants are ok to plant and properly dispose of grass clippings.

It’s important to know who is in charge of your neighborhood system, and it’s also important to know how you can help out in your community to keep your neighborhood stormwater system as clean as possible.
