HOA Floating Fountains
Are you looking for a floating fountain for your retention pond?
Or has your fountain called it quits and it is beyond repair?
We often have people request fountains for a variety of reasons. Some are trying to solve their algae problems, others hope to slow down their aquatic weeds, while others just are looking for a little “bling” for their subdivision.
Take for instance, John’s story. He was frustrated with his HOA floating fountain. Somehow John, being the new guy in the neighborhood was convinced to volunteer to help care for the retention pond.
It sounded easy, he loved water and felt strongly about giving back to his community. So why not? Right?
Little did he know what the future held. Using a boat, each month he would paddle out to his fountain, flip the fountain over and un-clog the fountain.
Some days the water was freezing cold and he couldn’t even feel his hands and other’s it was just an interruption to his day when he would rather be playing golf.
Now labeled “the pond guy” by everyone in the neighborhood (almost like they couldn’t remember his name was John) he now was solely responsible for his HOA fountain & pond. But then it happened again.
Rapidly plugging and unplugging the fountain, nothing happened. The fountain was dead in the water. And it seemed like this happened every holiday. He knew the fountain would have some wear and tear running continually but this was ridiculous.
Now he was going to have to call a friend, load up the fountain again in his friend’s pick-up and ship it back to Florida to have work done on it again under warranty.
While waiting for several weeks for the fountain to return and being “the pond guy” of course everyone call John. Emails begin to pour in.
“When is the fountain going to running?” they would say. ”I have my long lost relative flying in for Europe blah, blah, blah and it’s the first time they have been to the United States. We only one chance to make a first impression.”
John’s “favorite” neighbor was Sue… who lived on the street with the pond. Sue loved nature. Sue always walked her dog around the pond each day. She always seemed to have a lot time and didn’t have to work because her husband was a VP of well-known global company.
John really believed her mission in life was to keep an eye on the fish in the stormwater retention pond. Every time Sue saw a dead minnow she would email John a full report.
After the third go around of the fountain breaking John was ready to throw in the towel. John’s thankless job had become a nightmare.
Still want a floating fountain for your retention pond?
Like most items it really comes down to the warranty and “if” the company will be still in business.
But with the arrival of internet, pricing has been slashed to the bone with very little profit for a “dealer” to even feed a family, let alone service the unit after the sale.
So we had to get creative. We found that guiding our members to the vendors directly to purchase a fountain at the lowest price was the best solution for everyone.
However, we will caution everyone that fountains are mainly for “bling,” do little to reduce the muck in your pond and come with a large $100 - $500 per month power bill.
Bottom aeration is best solution and the power costs as little as $15 per month for a .5 acre pond.
