Hey it’s Richard here with Platinum Ponds & Lake Management. We wanted to show you here a 12 inch retention pond pipe and this is a beautiful retention pond here in Asheville, North Carolina that we maintain with our membership.
We’ve just unclogged the top of this drain, one of the features that we offer for our members is on a monthly basis we are able to take care of these pipes and you can see there the actual valve that you would turn to carry the water out of the pond.
The water is actually stacked up a few inches, 4 or 5 inches higher than the top of this pipe where it should be. This is the emergency flow that it’s been using down this pipe. So we’ve unclogged the pipe and we’re now able to you get the water to drop a few inches.
Checking your pipes is really important because we could have levees that blowout. We can have destruction for aquatic plants and we can have issues that happen around the pipes. So water level needs to be maintained on a regular basis in a pond.
Often people forget that they are storm water ponds and they need to be maintained regularly, otherwise you can pay a dear price both financially as well structurally for your ecosystem that’s in your neighborhood, this is an HOA pond here.
So what we want to do is kind of flip over to the other side of the pond pipe and you can see as soon as we release the water from the top of that pipe it came out rushing very quickly. So this would be like what happens during a flash flood event because all the rainwater is going into this pond off the hillside watershed areas. To control this water flow is very important because you can cause erosion down the streams.
