Duckweed is one of the most prolific aquatic plants in North & South Carolina.  This very small 1/8” green plant with “hair like roots” call fronds, thrives best on stagnate ponds and lakes.

Replicating up to 5x’s a day can cover the entire body of water in less than one month.  Getting it name from traveling on the backs of ducks, this aquatic weed can appear anytime in any HOA pond or lake in the Upstate.

Often mistaken for algae this fern family plant is resistant to over the counter herbicides and can be nearly impossible to kill topically.  Consulting with a licensed aquatic herbicide applicator is required by the state of South Carolina to treat any body of water that is connected to streams, creeks or owned by an HOA.

Private ponds not overflowing into any other public body of water may be treated legally by the property owner but usually without success.

The best and least expensive way of removing or killing duckweed in your farm pond, retention pond or lake is with a licensed aquatic herbicide applicator.  These licensed businesses can treat the duckweed internally with results in less than 60 days.

With simple prevention and pond management skills your pond or lake can be beautiful year round.
