Water shield is a popular aquatic weed in South Carolina.  This invasive aquatic plant loves clear, acid water and depths up to five feet.  Water shield is often accompanied by water lilies, bladderwort, milfoil & spiked rush in the Greenville / Spartanburg / Asheville / Charlotte NC areas.

And as you can see from this photo it has covered the majority of the pond.

Water shield is easily identified by is an oval shape, smooth edges, and floating leaves.  The leaves can be from 1-3 inches long with a branching stem anchored by a creeping root attached to the center of the leaf.

Water shield leaves are green on top and a reddish-purple on its underside. These leaves feature a unique slimy gel coating and bloom with an insignificant small faded purple flower.
